Project ARA

The Real Smartness

Hai tech-craze fellows, I'm sure that you must read this article about GOOGLE's new project on SmartPhones!! Are SmartPhones really smart enough to fulfill the need and greed of modern youngsters? "Yes", you may say; yeah, I don't disagree. It of course satisfies the need but what about the greed and craze of youngsters in buying and using new updated phones (I mean the hardware). Every phone becomes out of date one day, whatever may be the price of phone. And you should agree with me , Huh!!

Please don't say WOW

GOOGLE, the BIG BOSS has sensed the reality and came up with the new idea - the project 'ARA'. Its concept is 'Modular' Phone. Is it not amazing?? Yeah each and every important parts of a SmartPhone (Camera, TouchPad, Graphics, Display, Storage, Memory, CPU [Oh my god!!] , Connectivity , Battery etc etc) are replaceable. Thus it paves way for infinite combinations and possibilities. Just think of a phone where you could change the normal camera to a night vision just by changing camera module of it. Yeah! camera is JUST A PART OF IT. What if you break your TouchScreen accidentally. Have you to go in search of customer service center to replace it? No, because the project ARA says "Just buy a new TouchScreen module ;Replace it yourself ; Go on!". That's it.

You may think " The Phone has got removable parts, so phone may not feel strong enough to resist normal to heavy usage". But the fact is that, it is very much reliable cuz the modules are fixed to the basic skeleton of the phone by means of a very strong ElectroPermanent Magnets. And after all you can just relax and believe google. Isn't the name ARA looking crazy? It is named after the project's chief mechanical designer, ARA. End user can buy a basic phone of this project for US$50 which is said to contain frame display, battery , low-end CPU and WiFi. It is said to have 3 different sizes mini, medium and large.

What an idea!

The aim of google in this project is that "once bought is bought forever". This concept can give rise to infinite capabilities ( according to wikipedia; It is mentioned that the parts have ∞ Modular
capability!!?? ( wikipedia/projARA  check this out ; It would really be funny) ). And the actual aim of google is to introduce open hardware platform , so this could pave way for other companies to design modules for their project. This concept of openness is well utilized by google in making ANDROID a great success (yeah ! it is a open-source operating system).

And the project is to be first implemented at Puerto Rico by the end of this year (2015) and soon to the rest of us! Out of 7 million people in the world only 2 million uses smartphone (some statistics says! ) And GOOGLE aims the rest 5 million non-SmartPhone users ( and the 2 million SmartPhone users too!! Greedy guy , isn't he?) . This project is expected to greatly reduce e-waste since the basic skeleton never tends to become obsolute! Donot forget to check their official sites @ www.projectara.com &  motorolaara.com

"Why buy a SmartPhone for Camera, instead buy a Camera for a SmartPhone !"

War of Currents

Hai there!!, We all know that most of today's applications are in ALTERNATING CURRENT. And does anybody know how it was established? and why DIRECT CURRENT is not used? There did happen an interesting cold war between the establishment of AC current over DC current. It was actually the war between two scientists Thomas Edison and Nicolo Tesla. Tesla was on side of AC and Edison on DC.

In united states it all went peacefully when there existed only DC transmission by Edison invested by 'General Electric Works'. He was able to supply current over a particular radius from the generating station. As we all know there existed a lot of problems in the DC transmission. He was able to transmit over a particular distance only or there would exist an appreciable voltage loss, so that the appliances could not use that. Also due to voltage drop there existed current loss in the transmission lines which caused a lot of wastage. Even though at first it was the only reliable source of electricity in US.

It all went peacefully until Tesla came up with the idea of using AC in machines. But the practical problem over that time is that all appliances were established for DC and it would require a lot of reform to reinstall for AC. So Tesla's idea was considered a failure and no investors did come forward to help him. He was all alone.

An interesting thing is that Tesla worked under Edison for some period. Tesla was obviously genius and he is basically a mathematician and can do calculations mentally. So it would be naturally difficult for anyone to work with him. First the idea of AC transmission was proposed to Edison but he insulted him and so Tesla got seperated. He then got an investor George Westinghouse. But eventhough it was initially difficult for him to establish AC because there existed many misconceptions among the people.

It was considered that that AC is more dangerous than DC. Edison added fuel to this fire by his attempts that he tried to prove them by cruely killing animals. Especially a baby elephant was killed by electrocuting using AC. The reasoning for killing it was as that it caused nuisance to public which actually is not true! Also Edison suggested AC electrocution, a potential tortureless replacement for hanging. And it was experimented on a victim and  since, the required minimum voltage to kill a person was unknown, it resulted in failure. But this attempt made public and press against Edison.

And amongst all these Tesla could successfully establish AC since it provided a greater advantage that it can be sent over long distances without appreciable voltage drop or current. This is achieved by stepping up at transmitting station to very high voltage and stepping down again at receiving station. And so it all changed. The system was changed from DC to AC completely.

We may think that Nicolo Tesla won Edison , but the actual winner is  the investor of Tesla.
So both could not enjoy the fruits of their hardwork.
